THE HAVEN
Craig Newman
THE HAVEN is a taut thriller about psychological manipulation, the weaponisation of wellbeing, and the indistinguishable nature between love and control. Written by a clinical psychologist whose work centres on abusive relationships, it provides authentic insights into coercive control and why people remain in harmful situations. Inspired by Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, Hugh Howey’s Wool and Justin Cronin’s The Passage, it also draws from classic works of psychology such as Erich Fromm’s Escape from Freedom.
Lucy is a therapist, dedicated to serving her clients on their journey towards perfect alignment. She is a member of The Haven, a utopian community founded post-society’s collapse, where residents are encouraged to rid themselves of the pathological urge to be free. All that keeps them inside The Haven is a simple white line, but it’s a border that no one is willing to cross.
Lucy is sent to treat the dying Alice, one of the original founders of The Haven, who lives deep underground, shielded from the community above. Initially reticent that she is not skilled enough to help someone so important to The Haven, Lucy is further blindsided when she finds herself falling dangerously in love with Alice.
During their sessions, Lucy learns more about what The Haven really is, and the dark and violent secrets that are essential for its continued survival. Lucy must make a choice; does she save everyone she loves from the system or risk it all outside The Haven.
Dr Craig Newman is a psychologist with doctorates in clinical psychology, behavioural economics, and organisational coaching. His work primarily focuses on the impact of coercive control and he is the author of Get Out Get Love, a book supporting recovery from relationship trauma. He was inspired to write THE HAVEN in response to the question ‘why don’t they just leave?’ and as a reflection of how pervasive psychological manipulation has become in modern life. The beginning of a series, THE HAVEN serves as a modern allegory about love and freedom told through the lens of dystopian fiction.

- Is this what they mean by abuse?
- Why am I tolerating such a bad relationship?
- Will I ever be able to get out and feel free?
If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, you may be, or have been, in an abusive relationship, even without realising.
Every minute, more than 20 people in the UK or US are abused by their partner.
Get Out, Get Love is an essential guide to the journey that anyone who is in, leaving or has left an abusive relationship must undertake. It takes the reader through three key stages - getting understanding (of the reasons we fall into abuse and why we tolerate it), getting out (escaping, breaking the cycle and staying away) and getting love (seeking closure, regaining trust and developing self love).
Unlike other books on this subject, Get Out, Get Love focuses uniquely on putting control of the narrative in your hands. By helping you understand yourself better, it will show you how to embrace both growth and change, to create a future of freedom and joy.
Author and psychologist Dr Craig Newman, who was himself in an abusive relationship, presents a supportive and proven recovery plan that has helped so many of his clients, and will help you, to Get Out and Get Love.
